The Lowdown.
Colombian coffee is famous for its quality and ranked as one of the best in the world. The country has the perfect geographical and climatic conditions for growing coffee – Andean hills, tropical location, high rainfall and a mild climate. Colombia, with its perfect terrain and climate, is one of the only countries that produce 100% arabica coffee, considered to be the best quality bean.
First explore a local farmer market and chat with the merchants about where certain fruits come from and how to eat them. Of course, focus on fruits of season and region – the closer the farm the better.
Soon fill up your basket with plenty of mouth-watering delicious fruits and travel to the Botanical Garden of Medellín, located in the middle of the city. It is one of the few natural spots for local recreation within the city.
The area with a size of 14 ha is home to more than 4,500 different species of plants. It offers a large collection of orchids, the national flower of Colombia. In other words – the perfect setting for a picnic. Your experienced “fruit” guide will prepare carefully a unique tasting of a decent selection of the fruits.
While you enjoy the samples, you obtain further information about the fruits, its benefits, growing conditions and harvest and of course its cultural role within the Colombian people. Support directly local small-scale farmers of the Andean highlands around Medellín.
